Join us for the SRS70 Exhibit

Bring your mask and join us for a COVID friendly Gallery Opening Reception on Thursday, September 10 from 6 – 8 pm

The Aiken Center for the Arts is proud to host an extraordinary exhibit showcasing past and present scenes from SRS as part of its 70th year celebration. The impact of SRS on our community over the last 70 years can’t be overstated. Prior to President Truman’s announcement of the site’s selection as part of a national defense complex, Aiken was best known as an agricultural community and a favorite retreat for wealthy 19th century equestrians. While they had stately homes known as the Winter Colony, their cultural impact was somewhat limited to their inner circle. With the advent of SRS, Aiken soon saw significant changes brought by these atomic age homesteaders from all over the United States. With families in tow, engineers, scientists, construction workers, and administrative staff brought diversity to our area and showed a keen interest in being engaged in our community.

Many of us say Aiken is not your average small southern town. This is due, in large part, to SRS. Site personnel brought with them a desire to recreate the very best of the arts and education they knew in their former communities, and they brought the arts to us through active volunteerism and financial support. All of the companies that have operated at SRS over the last 70 years have been very generous to the arts. As leaders in our community, they have demonstrated their commitment not only to protect the public health and environment but also to meet the artistic needs of the people in Aiken County and the surrounding area. We at the Aiken Center for the Arts are very grateful to our major corporate SRS donors, and we wish to thank them for sponsoring this exhibit and their ongoing support.

Today, SRS continues to have vital missions that are key to our national security. Some of these missions are included in our photographic exhibition. As a special treat, this exhibit also includes beautiful photographs taken by SRS employees. Since its beginning, SRS has been keenly aware of its environmental responsibilities. These photographs capture the beauty of the Site’s 310 square miles.

Please join us for this unique gallery exhibit, which showcases the accomplishments of the hundreds of thousands of men and women whose collective knowledge and intellectual capital have benefited not only Aiken but our nation. The SRS70 exhibit runs from September 9 to October 23, 2020.

A Thrifty Christmas Celebration

Christmas in Ireland is a massive celebration over the entire month of December. Normally we would be celebrating Friendsmas, a great huge gathering of my husband’s mates from Blackrock College and their spouses in a nice large restaurant spilling over with people. There is also the grand adventure of The 12 Pubs of Christmas, where friends and family take on a pub crawl that is not for the faint of heart, as revelers must complete a set of challenges for each pub. Anyone sick of his family on Christmas Eve can wander down to his local watering hole, always bursting to the door with people. For television entertainment, there is

The Season of Change is Here!

Peeling off the layers and becoming who you truly are is hard work — it never comes easy. I know a lot of people that put on different faces depending on who is around them. Of course there is a business face when you are in a professional environment, a playful face when you are at home or out in nature, but that is not what I am referring to. I am talking about becoming your true authentic self. The you that has been pushed down due to life’s trauma, people’s negative opinion of you, hurts and pain — the things you think you can hide and never face, and

OPEN – HANDED Generosity

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across water to create many ripples.” MOTHER TERESA As we enter yet another month of the COVID-19 epidemic, I look around in wonder at the generosity I see in our community. Not only on the front lines in the ER, hospitals, police force, etc. but the dedicated service workers who continue to show up to keep a job, knowing they may be risking their own health as well as that of their families. What intrigues me the most is the generosity of those who daily continue to carry on the work of their churches and organizations manning the

100 Christmases | Palmetto Bella

100 Christmases

I walked into the old farmhouse that housed four generations of the Jenkins family. Suddenly memories of Christmas Eve flooded my mind. I remembered so many details of that special night that made me laugh and shed a tear, but mostly, my heart swelled with gratitude. Uncle Bill was standing in the doorway with his fancy video camera with enough lights to illuminate a football stadium. So what I did I get for Christmas that year? Retina damage… I remembered my grandfather — we called Gumpa. He sat in his old burgundy chair with the wooden arms. It was his corner, almost a sacred place. He had a bird’s eye
